Bristol Community College’s Educational Talent Search program receives federal grant approval and funding to continue assisting first-generation and low-income students to succeed in high school and post-secondary education

Bristol Community College’s Educational Talent Search program recently received grant application approval from the U.S. Department of Education. The competitive grant's approval was awarded upon the program’s substantial progress in achieving its approved goals and objectives and will provide continued funding assistance for the program for five years through 2026.

Bristol's Educational Talent Search program, a component of the college’s TRiO programs, strives to increase the number of college-bound students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are first-generation and low-income, complete high school, and enroll and succeed in post-secondary education.

The program provides participants with early college planning; academic, financial, career and personal counseling; tutoring; information about post-secondary education and college visits; assistance with completing college admissions and financial aid applications; preparation for college entrance exams; mentoring; and family involvement activities. The college’s Educational Talent Search program has identified and assisted more than 501 students from Kuss, Morton, Henry Lord and Talbot Middle Schools and B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River to persist into post-secondary education.

Bristol’s TRiO programs provide outreach, academic advising, tutoring, cultural enrichment and support services from middle school through a post-baccalaureate degree for first-generation, low-income, college-bound students and students with disabilities. The college’s TRiO programs include Educational Talent SearchUpward Bound and SSS/QUEST. TRiO was created in the 1960s and operates at over 1,200 community colleges and community agencies nationwide and is funded through competitive grants from the U.S. Department of Education.
