Bristol Mental Health Counseling FAQ
Counselors offer a safe space to explore feelings, manage stress and consider options for ongoing support. Counselors at the college cannot meet with students for long term treatment, provide diagnoses, or prescribe medications.
As a student in counseling, you are free to share information with whomever you choose. The Counseling Office cannot share any information about your treatment (including your attendance in counseling) with anyone without your explicit written consent, unless obligated to do so to protect your safety and/or the safety of others.
No, Mental Health Counselors are not Academic Counselors (Advisors) and cannot help you sign up for classes. Click here to learn more about meeting with an Advisor.
Counselors at Bristol will meet with students to assess, triage and connect to appropriate resources based on the student’s need. If a student is already working with an individual counselor outside of Bristol, sessions at the college will likely not extend beyond the initial consultation and assessment.
Letting a student know that there are services available on campus might be a helpful place to start. Consider sharing the Resources for Students page with someone who may be seeking some type of support but isn’t sure what they might need. If you are aware that a student is in danger of hurting themselves or someone else, dial 911 or 988.
Counseling services at Bristol are for enrolled students only, however, a counselor will be happy to consult briefly with Faculty/Staff to support connection to services in their respective communities.
