David H. Simser Scholarship Program
The David H. Simser Scholarship program provides awards to deserving students who major in biology/science. Students must be residents of Cape Cod, the islands or Southeastern, Mass.
"Simser," as he was known by his friends and scientific colleagues, was a trained entomologist whose research on ticks, cicadas, gypsy moths and nematodes was legendary on Cape Cod. Simser also worked on clean water issues, with farmers and farmers markets, community gardens, cranberry bogs, response to whale and dolphin strandings/rescues, botany and aquaculture. He was a well-rounded field biologist, concerned about the Cape Cod environment, water, plant and animal life. Committed to promoting the importance of education, Simser taught at Cape Cod Community College and Bridgewater State University for over 16 years. In his outreach and educational efforts, he was widely interviewed by the media and gave hundreds of talks to the community.
Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in a college/university and be enrolled during the following spring semester. Students must have a declared biological science major, including but not limited to; Agriculture, Aquaculture, Botany, Entomology, Marine/Environmental Science and Zoology... from A to Z. This is relatively inclusive; for example, if your major was Golf Course Management, this is especially relevant if your interest in the field is in developing ways to both manage harmful insects and reduce the use of pesticides which greatly affect our ground water. There are many complicated biology issues which greatly affect our region today. Click Here for more information.
