Tone, tempo, shape, color and composition are interchangeable in the aural and visual arts. Interludes are passages between two moments. Every photograph is a present that references both past and future. —Kathie Florsheim

The first portfolios Kathie Florsheim brought to me were a series of photographs depicting the changing coastline along the shores and beaches of Cape Cod and Rhode Island. Her insightful approach and interest in the documentation of the shifting relationships between sand and water is second only to her deep respect for the people whose livelihoods are affected by the cumulative impacts of climate change.

For a time, her work coalesced around Roy Carpenter's Beach, a summer camp, in Rhode Island. In this ongoing project, her intent has been to capture the effect of environmental changes and to honor and acknowledge the relationships of the people in coastal communities who only know a life connected to the sea.

More recently Florsheim's intuitive approach has shifted away from a documentary style of photography. Rather than simply reveal the evidential changes in our coastal landscape, she places the viewfinder in the tenuous, liminal, and ever shifting territory between water and land. Her newest body of work plants us on or in, it is not quite clear which, the water with our gaze facing the horizon. She captures moments that are soothing and almost playful, timeless but with an urgency and breadth of purpose.

No matter how many lifetimes I have stuffed my pockets with shell fragments and stones, been struck dumb by the light on the water, listened to the tide, those things are always new.

There is comfort in these rituals, for their consistency. Their details are lost in the wholeness of the experience.

Inside of those rituals, looking at details that are not necessarily part of a rounder memory of the shore, that is where I live. Those details are my day at the beach for their evocative associations, most of which we pass without recognition. They are clues that escort us to places we have been, things we have seen-without ever having recognized them as part of the experience.

These images are about memory.

My own memories send me, repeatedly to a particular place that exists physically, and in my heart. So many years of drinking in the light, wearing it, carrying it with me everywhere I go, letting it rescue me on bad days…

I am grateful.
