BCC Art and Design Faculty Exhibition 2016
Works by Full-time and Adjunct BCC Art and Design Program Faculty

We cap 2016 with the return of our triennial BCC Art and Design Faculty Exhibition. As always, we are delighted by the diversity, enthusiasm, and rigor our artist/teachers' work reveals. Studio teaching and making are often woven together in ways that mutually support the creative process for everyone. The faculty exhibition provides an opportunity for students to see what their teachers are up to. It is a way for us to reflect on the way studio practice informs, not only an artist's work, but also in the way that it can contribute to a deeper understanding of what it means to teach.
This time around, the exhibition includes the works of Sixten Abbot, Maryellen Atkins, David Barnes, Däna LeAnne Brown, Jason Chase, Brooke Mullins Doherty, Denise Donatelli, Erik Durant, David Graves, Kathleen Hancock, Katherine Knutsen, Ron Lister, Greg Rebis, Beth Thomas, John Tschirch, Tim Walsh, and Alison Wells.

Sixten Abbot
Sixten Abbot holds a BFA from RISD and an MFA from MassArt. He owes his current artistic aesthetic almost entirely to his tenure at the Dynamic Media Institute, with a soupçon of dystopic SCI-FI directors and authors. His current obsessions are Yasuhiro Yoshiura's anime Ivu no Jikan, the manga Kuragehime, and C.J. Cherryh's 17-book(!) Foreigner series.
Maryellen Atkins
Maryellen Atkins is an Assistant Professor of Design and Digital Media at BCC. Atkins has lived, studied and worked professionally on four continents. Prior to working as an animator, Atkins worked as a digital artist, employed by world-renowned photographer Clint Clemens; Hamburg, Germany based retouching house Zerone CGI; and Boston based visualization firm Neoscape. Atkins holds an MFA in Animation and Digital Arts from New York University Tisch School of the Arts and a BA from Stonehill College. When not working on films, Maryellen can usually be found on the ocean swimming, surfing or sailing.
David Barnes
David Barnes earned a BFA in painting from the University of New Hampshire and received his MFA in painting from UMass Dartmouth. Awards include "Best of Show" from the Newport Art Museum's Annual Juried Members Exhibit 2007. In 2016, he received a Pollock Krasner Grant. Recent shows include Locally Made, RISD Museum, Providence RI; Legacies in Paint: The Mentoring Project, Newport Art Museum, Newport RI; and Crisis and Transcendence, University of Rhode Island Gallery, Kingston RI. He teaches introductory and advanced drawing as well as two dimensional design courses.
Däna Leanne Brown
Däna LeAnne Brown is an artist model and yoga instructor residing in Fall River, MA. She has been a figure drawing model at BCC for 10 years and has been teaching yoga and meditation to the Southcoast Massachusetts community for 5 years. Däna holds a BFA in sculpture/3D design from UMass Dartmouth. During her earlier years as an artist, she was interested in creating large works intended to inhabit outdoor spaces. But since stepping onto the path of yoga and meditation, her desire to make smaller, more intimate works has taken over. Her work now mimics her minimalistic, unadorned, yet richly textured, approach to life.
Jason Chase
Jason Chase has been teaching since 2002 and at BCC since 2008. He holds an MFA in painting from Boston University and received a BA in fine arts from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he was awarded honors of Highest Distinction in Fine Art. Recent exhibitions include The MFA Summer Friday Series as a featured artist, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Summer Party, Juried Auction, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Stars and Cars, Laconia Gallery, Boston. He currently teaches painting, drawing and two-dimensional design courses.
Brooke Mullins Doherty
Brooke Mullins Doherty's sculptures, drawings, and prints have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. She has had recent solo shows at the New Bedford Art Museum, the Cotuit Center for the Arts, Van Vessem Gallery in Tiverton, Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford; Leslie Powell Gallery in Lawton, OK; Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State University; Frame 301 at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, 80 Border Street Cultural Exchange in East Boston; and the Student Union Art Gallery at the University of Massachusetts. She has also participated in numerous exhibitions including Art in the Park in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Denise Donatelli
Denise Donatelli is a long time instructor of photography at BCC. Educated at SMU and RISD, Donatelli's work has been exhibited in venues throughout the region, including the Phoenix Gallery, Artworks, the Westport Library, and the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery. A professional freelance photographer, Donatelli's photos have been featured in brochures and informational materials for regional civic organizations such as the Fall River Historic Preservation Commission and the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Transit Authority. Recently, Donatelli led a photo tour of historic New Bedford as part of AHA! night and donated three of her photographs for auction to benefit the New Bedford Fisherman's Heritage Center.
Erik Durant
Erik Durant received an MFA in sculpture from UMass Dartmouth and a BA in history from Southern Connecticut State University. Since graduating, he has exhibited work both regionally and nationally. Durant is a member of the National Sculpture Society and has participated in two of their National Figure Modeling Competitions. His most recent commissions include the New Bedford Fishermen's Tribute Monument and the Tom Lopes M emorial. He currently serves as the Fine Art program coordinator at Bristol Community College.
David Graves
David Graves is a BCC Art Transfer alum who continued on to UMass Dartmouth to study graphic design and photography. After graduation, he worked as a creative director for 5 years and established a photography studio practice in Fall River. His current work is a commentary on the excess of the fashion industry. Through dressmaking, with found objects and photographic printmaking, he addresses themes of beauty, poverty, body image, and the ephemeral state of fashion as a whole. He is currently pursuing his MFA at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Kathleen Hancock
In addition to her position as gallery director, Kathleen Hancock is an arts educator. For many years, she taught drawing and printmaking courses at BCC, Roger Williams University, and RISD's Continuing Education Program. She received a BFA from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY and holds an MFA in printmaking from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Her current body of work is an ongoing cinematic memoir. She also designs and builds small scale furniture inspired by mid-century design. Recent exhibitions include 19@25, Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI, and Once removed, A Chair is Still a Chair, Carole Calo Gallery, Stonehill College.
Katheriine Knutsen
Kat Knutsen is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work combines different material platforms such as oil painting on canvas, stop motion animation, and sound. She earned her BFA in 2011 from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with an interdisciplinary approach in painting, ceramics, and social psychology. She holds an MFA in painting from UMass Dartmouth. In 2016 she participated in the production of the film Loving Vincent. Knutsen's approach is heavily influenced by her early life's experiences, observing how categories and labels are used to identify and interpret. Her work combines different systems of labeling, and encourages a flexible approach in the artist's studio practice.
Ron Lister
Both Ron Lister's BFA and MFA are from Miami University, Oxford, OH. He is the author of Drawing with Pastels and Designing Cards and Paper Products both published by Prentice Hall. In 2002 the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery mounted a retrospective of his work. He recently retired from full time commitments but continues to teach part-time in the art program at BCC. He continues to paint and in 2014 completed a series of paintings inspired by an immersive 6-week journey in New Zealand and the Cook Islands. He was awarded Professor Emeritus status in 2015. He recently exhibited work in a two-person show at Judith Klein Art Gallery in New Bedford.
Greg Rebis
Greg Rebis descended upon Providence, RI in 2003 to attend the Rhode Island School of Design for Architecture. His illustrations have been published in a handful of graphic novels and countless school textbooks, while his retro pop-themed ceramics have invaded the curio shelves of at least a couple of discriminating collectors. Before returning to illustration, his architectural work included several interactive zoo exhibits in Providence and elsewhere. Working across media in paint, ceramic, bits and bytes, he is developing a body of work and personal visual language drawing on his fascinations with sci-fi and "fantasy," the genesis and evolution of varied world mythologies, and the interplay between the seen and unseen.
Beth Thomas
Beth Thomas is the founder, lead designer, and WordPress developer at the print and digital agency BMD&M. Previously, she served as lead designer at GladWorks, for clients such as Gulf and Dunkin' Donuts. On weekends Beth helps her husband with his catering business, The Bearded Chicken, and enjoys decorating and DIY projects. Beth received her Bachelor's degree in communication with a concentration in advertising from the University of New Haven. She got her start at BCC and earned a certificate in graphic design from the college. Beth resides in Somerset with her husband, two daughters, Gemmah and Harper, and dog, Jax.
John Tschirch
John Tschirch is an architectural historian and writer who began to use photography to study buildings. As his work in the medium evolved, his interests moved from looking at structures in their entirety to focusing on capturing the monumental and aesthetic qualities of architecture in the details of ornament and the play of light and shadow in spaces. John's images draw the viewer into an intimate experience with architecture and the potential of a small detail to invoke the spirit of a place and an age. His current project is photographing chateaux in the Loire valley to accompany his historical fiction novel set in late 17th century France.
Tim Walsh
Tim Walsh is a graphic designer from Fall River, MA. In addition to working as a graphic designer, he teaches digital photography at BCC. He holds a BA in communications from UMass Amherst and an AA in graphic design from BCC. As a freelance designer, Tim has worked extensively with various creative teams conceptualizing and implementing designs such as the new sports logo and mascot for UMass Dartmouth, the branding and interiors for The Airport Grille in New Bedford, MA, branding and print collateral for The Narrows Center for The Arts, and numerous other businesses and organizations throughout southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Alison Wells
Alison Wells is a Trinidadian artist whose paintings are part of private, public, and corporate collections. She has exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, the Caribbean and Europe in both solo and group exhibitions. Some of these include D'art Contemporaine in Pont Aven, France; The National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain, Trinidad; Clover Fine Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; The Mutual Life Gallery in Kingston, Jamaica; and The New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford, MA. Wells lives and works in New Bedford and earned her MFA in painting from UMass Dartmouth and her BFA in painting from The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Kingston, Jamaica.
