Service-Learning Program

Service-Learning is an experiential methodology that provides students with active learning opportunities related to course content while meeting needed services in the community. Students gain practical work experience while applying lessons learned in the classroom to real life situations. Students who successfully complete and document their service-learning project within a specific semester receive the notation “Service-Learning Component” under the title of the course on their academic transcript.

Steps involved for Service-Learning:

  1. Read the Pre-Service Learning Training Guide.
  2. Complete the Pre-Service Learning Survey.
  3. Identify a community partner (from a nonprofit organization) for whom you will serve a minimum of 10 unpaid hours, over the semester, on a project related to your course content. Your professor may have selected community partners for your course.  If your professor agrees, you may use established Civic Engagement Community Partners or other nonprofit agencies.
  4. Discuss a placement and reflection assignment with your professor.
  5. Complete a Service-Learning Contract (p. 1) and Acknowledgment of Risk and Liability Waiver (p. 2) and submit them by the 4th week of classes. Please note that service hours begin AFTER the contract and waiver are received by Civic Engagement.
  6. Submit Service-Learning Timesheet by week 11.
  7. Complete required reflection assignment before the end of the semester.
  8. Receive Service-Learning Component notation on your academic transcript.
