BCC Art Faculty Exhibition 2013
Works by Full-time and Adjunct BCC Art and Design Program Faculty

Each time the gallery hosts the Art and Design Faculty Exhibition we are reminded of the diverse interests and professional pursuits of our Art and Design program faculty here at BCC. And it is through this forum that we have the chance to witness the enthusiasm, breadth, and creative wealth the faculty brings to those programs. In addition to some familiar faces, we also have the pleasure to introduce the works of some of our newest adjunct and full-time faculty members to the BCC community. This time around, the exhibition includes the works of Sixten Abbot, Maryellen Atkins, David Barnes, Jason Chase, Brooke Mullins Doherty, Denise Donatelli, Elizabeth Dooher, Erik Durant, Christopher Durocher, Connie Babian Grab, Kathleen Hancock, Ron Lister, Marisa Millard, Eleanor Sabin, Cynthia Swanson, Jesse Thompson, John Tschirch, Tim Walsh, and Alison Wells.

Sixten Abbot
Sixten Abbot received his BFA from RISD in 1992 and is just beginning an MFA program at MassArt's Dynamic Media Institute. His name, "Sixten", apparently means "victory stone" in Swedish, although he has no Swedish ancestry (his parents named him for the tragic male lead in 1967's "Elvira Madigan"). When not watching "Watashi ga Motenai no wa d? Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! " or reading any one of a number of dystopic SCI-FI authors, he may occasionally be found kayaking the icy waters of Rhode Island. This is his fourth year teaching graphic design courses at BCC.
Maryellen Atkins
Maryellen Atkins is a new addition to the Design and Digital Media faculty at BCC. Atkins has lived, studied and worked professionally on four continents. Never settling too far from the ocean, her work often reflects the maritime influences of her upbringing. Prior to animation, Atkins worked as a digital artist, employed by world-renowned photographer Clint Clemens; Hamburg, Germany based retouching house Zerone CGI; and Boston based visualization firm Neoscape. Atkins holds an MFA in Animation and Digital Arts from New York University Tisch School of the Arts and a BA from Stonehill College. When not working on films, Maryellen can usually be found on the ocean swimming, surfing, or sailing.
David Barnes
David Barnes holds a BFA in Painting from the University of New Hampshire and received his MFA in Painting from UMass Dartmouth. His awards include "Best of Show" from the Newport Art Museum's Annual Juried Members Exhibit 2007. He was also a 2007 finalist for the Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship. Recent shows include New Art 2007 , MPG Contemporary Gallery, Brandeis University; Works on Paper , Providence Art Club; Locally Made , RISD Museum, Providence RI; Legacies in Paint: The Mentoring Project , Newport Art Museum, Newport RI; and Crisis and Transcendence , University of Rhode Island Gallery, Kingston RI. He teaches introductory and advanced drawing as well as two dimensional design courses.
Jason Chase
Jason Chase has been teaching since 2002 and with BCC since 2008. He holds an MFA in Painting from Boston University and received a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, where he was awarded honors of Highest Distinction in Fine Art. Recent exhibitions include The MFA Summer Friday Series as a Featured Artist , Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Summer Party , Juried Auction, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Stars and Cars , Laconia Gallery, Boston. He currently teaches painting, drawing and two-dimensional design courses.
Brooke Mullins Doherty
Brooke Mullins Doherty's sculptures, drawings, and prints have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. She has had recent solo shows at the New Bedford Art Museum, Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford, Leslie Powell Gallery in Lawton, OK, Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State University, Frame 301 at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA, 80 Border Street Cultural Exchange in East Boston, and the Student Union Art Gallery at the University of Massachusetts. She has also participated in numerous exhibitions including Art in the Park in Worcester, MA.
Denise Donatelli
Denise Donatelli is a long time instructor of photography at BCC. Educated at SMU and RISD, Donatelli's work has been exhibited in venues throughout the region, including the Phoenix Gallery, Artworks, and the Westport Library. A professional freelance photographer, Donatelli's photos have been featured in brochures and informational materials for regional civic organizations such as the Fall River Historic Preservation Commission and the Southeastern Massachusetts Regional Transit Authority.
Elizabeth Dooher
Elizabeth Dooher holds an MFA from UMass Dartmouth, and a BA in Sculpture from The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH. She teaches drawing and three-dimensional design courses. Recent exhibitions include New Bedford Harbor In a New Light , University Art Gallery,New Bedford, MA; The River Project: Art in Nature Slocum's River Reserve , Dartmouth, MA; The River Project 2012: Thoughts and Processes , Gustin Gallery, Dartmouth, MA; and The Unequal Cross Lights , New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford, MA.
Erik Durant
Erik Durant received an MFA in Sculpture from UMass Dartmouth, and a BA in history from Southern Connecticut State University. Durant has exhibited work both regionally and nationally in the past few years. Recently he participated in the National Sculpture Society Figure Modeling Competition. Currently he is working on a commission to build the New Bedford Fisherman's Tribute Monument. He serves as the Art program coordinator.
Christopher Durocher
Christopher Durocher lives in Massachusetts and is a teacher, freelance photographer, and a graphic designer. He teaches art and design courses at BCC, Bentley University, and the Art Institute of Pittsburg. Durocher holds a BFA in Integrated Media from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions including Panopticon Gallery, Boston, MA; Cape Breton University, Sidney, Nova Scotia; PhotoPlace Gallery, Middlebury, VT; and The Gallery at Mount Ida College, Newton, MA.
Connie Babian Grab
Connie Babian Grab is an educator, book artist and graphic designer currently teaching typography and publication design at BCC and Salve Regina University. She holds a BFA in Advertising Design from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MFA in Visual Design: Typography from UMass Dartmouth. Grab's personal work includes monotype printmaking and artists' books incorporating poetry, low-tech printing processes and botanical imagery. She seeks to imbue her work with the same sense of awe, respite, and reflection she finds in the natural landscape as well as in traditional garden designs from diverse cultures.
Kathleen Hancock
Kathleen Hancock has taught introductory drawing and printmaking courses at BCC. She received a BFA in Fine Arts from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY and holds an MFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Recent exhibitions include Bookends : The Book As Art, Torpedo Factory Art Center's Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, MD; 3rd Annual Open Juried Exhibit, Works On Paper , Juror: Bill Newkirk, Imago Gallery, Warren, RI; On 40 at 40 , Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery, BCC; and 19@25 , Newport Art Museum, Newport, RI.
Ron Lister
Both Ron Lister's BFA and MFA are from Miami University, Oxford, OH. Since 2000 he has played music with The Alleged Ceili Band an Irish dance band out of Cumberland, RI. He is the author of "Drawing with Pastels" and "Designing Cards and Paper Products" both published by Prentice Hall. In 2002 the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery presented a one-man retrospective of his work. He recently retired from full time commitments but continues to teach part-time in the Art program at BCC.
Marisa Millard
Marisa Millard coordinates the Graphic Design, Web Design and Media Arts, and Animation and Motion Graphics programs at BCC. She teaches classes in graphic design, as well as colloquia and seminars for fine arts and design majors. She has an MFA in Graphic Design from University of North Texas, a BFA in Graphic Design and a BA in English from Texas Christian University. A graphic designer for over 20 years, Marisa maintains a design practice with her husband, focusing on both print and web design projects.
Eleanor Sabin
Originally from the state of New York, Eleanor Sabin graduated from RISD in 2006 with a BFA in Sculpture. She teaches at BCC as well as with the RISD Continuing Education Department. She also works at Rag and Bone book bindery in Pawtucket, RI. In her free time, Sabin enjoys exploring the coastline and woods of Rhode Island, documenting her excursions in photos, playing a few good foot tapping songs on banjo, and obsessing about composting and vegetable gardening.
Cynthia Swanson
Cynthia Swanson holds an MFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. She teaches art history courses both online and on campus. Recent exhibitions include Linear , Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery, BCC; Eclectic Abstraction , Spirol Gallery, Quinebaug Valley Community College, Danielson, CT; Paper Dialectics , The Art Gallery, Kent State University, Trumbull Campus, Warren, OH; Talking Papers , Mazmanian Gallery, Framingham State College, Framingham, MA; Elusive Geometries , Chazan Gallery, Wheeler School, Providence, RI; and Storm Tossed, Bristol Art Museum visits Warren , Imago Gallery, Warren, RI.
Jesse Thompson
Originally from New Jersey, Jesse Thompson has made his home in Providence, RI. After graduating from RISD's Masters in Sculpture Program in 2007, Jesse established a studio on Providence's west side where he makes sculptures, paintings, drawings, and friends with stray cats. He teaches drawing, illustration, anatomy, and animation at RISD, MassArt, Monserrat College of Art, Johnson and Wales University and BCC. When not in his studio, Jesse is an avid drawer and can often be found filling up sketchbooks at figure drawing sessions or drawing on location in and around Providence.
John Tschirch
John Tschirch is an architectural historian and writer who began to use photography to study buildings. As his work in the medium evolved, his interests moved from looking at structures in their entirety to focusing on capturing the monumental and aesthetic qualities of architecture in the details of ornament and the play of light and shadow in spaces. Whether depicting cloisters in Italy or commercial buildings in Rhode Island, John's images draw the viewer into an intimate experience with architecture and the potential of a small detail to invoke the spirit of a place and an age. His next project is photographing chateaux in the Loire valley to accompany his historical fiction novel set in late 17th century France.
Tim Walsh
Tim Walsh is a graphic designer from Fall River, MA. In addition to working as a graphic designer, he teaches digital photography at BCC. He holds a BA in Communications from UMass Amherst and an AA in Graphic Design from BCC. As a freelance designer, Tim has worked extensively with various creative teams conceptualizing and implementing designs such as the new sports logo and mascot for UMass Dartmouth, the branding and interiors for The Airport Grille in New Bedford, MA, branding and print collateral for The Narrows Center For The Arts, and numerous other businesses and organizations throughout southern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Alison Wells
Alison Wells is a Trinidadian artist whose paintings are part of private, public, and corporate collections. She has exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, the Caribbean and Europe in both solo and group exhibitions. Some of these include D'art Contemporaine in Pont Aven, France; The National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain, Trinidad; Clover Fine Art Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; The Mutual Life Gallery in Kingston, Jamaica; and The New Bedford Art Museum, New Bedford, MA. Wells lives and works in New Bedford and earned her MFA in Painting from UMass Dartmouth and her BFA in Painting from The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Kingston, Jamaica.
