About President Laura L. Douglas, Ph.D.
President Laura L. Douglas, Ph.D., is an agent of positive growth and change dedicated to working with students, faculty, and staff to foster an inclusive environment with a rich diversity of beliefs, cultures, languages, abilities, and lifestyles. Taking the helm as Bristol Community College’s fourth president on July 3, 2017, President Douglas aims to bolster the college-going culture within the community and help students reach their goals and be successful in their lives. Having come from a large multi-campus community college system, she has strategies in mind to position BCC for future success, including ways to further collaboration, shared decision-making, and transparency. She feels strongly that no matter the location, BCC amounts to one great unified and innovative institution.
President Douglas has a remarkable record of accomplishment working with underrepresented populations to enroll them in college and ensure that they graduate. During her career, she has served at community colleges in Japan, Michigan, North Carolina, and Iowa. Her professional and scholarly interests include leadership, organizational behavior, and community college governance. Most recently, President Douglas served as Provost of Des Moines Area Community College’s Urban Campus (DMACC). She has worked at every level in higher education including teaching, student services leadership, international education, research, inclusion, planning, and governance.
Prior to working at DMACC, she served as vice president for instructional and student services at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, N.C. In this role, she spearheaded academics, student life, literacy programs, workforce development, and continuing education among other initiatives. She was an adjunct faculty member at Ottawa University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; planner for the Office of Planning and Governance at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and campus dean and head of campus at Sullivan County Community College in Toyama, Japan. President Douglas earned a Bachelor of Arts in social welfare from the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine; a Master of Arts in international administration from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt.; a Master of Arts in higher education, and a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.
