Today, I begin my new post as President of Bristol Community College. I am humbled to follow in President Sbrega’s footsteps and look forward to becoming a part of BCC—a great institution with a superior track record and the center for higher education, literacy programming, and workforce training in our region. As president, I want to work with you to be an agent of positive growth and change. I want to bolster the college-going culture within the community so that we can fill the skilled, professional jobs that are vacant in our region and give our community members a greater chance to build wealth for themselves and their families. This means that we will have to work especially hard with underrepresented populations to enroll them in college and ensure that they graduate.
Our number one focus will continue to be the success of our students. Whether they come with plans to transfer, go directly into the workforce, learn English, earn their high school equivalency, or learn a new skill, our work is to help students reach their goals and be successful in their lives. With BCC’s exceptional and committed faculty and staff, our students will go far and be encouraged to stay local, as they are our best investment for the future. I am dedicated to working with everyone to foster an inclusive environment with a rich diversity of beliefs, cultures, languages, abilities, and lifestyles at all of the BCC locations.
Having come from a large multi-campus community college system, I have some strategies in mind to position BCC for future success, including ways to further collaboration, shared decision-making, and transparency. I feel strongly that no matter the location, BCC amounts to one great unified and innovative institution. It is imperative that we build strong partnerships with business and industry throughout the many communities that we serve, guaranteeing that our programs align with the jobs we need to make the region a strong economic contender within the Commonwealth. With your help, BCC will continue to be a transformational agent for our economy, and our graduates will be able to count on good-paying, sustainable jobs.
In the coming weeks as part of the #BCCConnect Tour, I will be reaching out to, and meeting with, members of the college community—students, faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and community leaders. We have a Transition Team that represents a diverse constituency of stakeholders. The team serves as an advisory group and facilitates a collaborative and inclusive transition process. In closing, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and interest in the college. I am not only the new president of BCC, I am your president and champion. I want to get to know you, and I want to know you by name. When you see me out and about, do not hesitate to say hello and introduce yourself. In higher education, we know that success is all about relationships. Let’s build relationships with one another and shape BCC’s future together.
