About the show

Counter Tension is the second collaborative installation by artists Doug Cluff, Lisa Baldani Hansel, Mike Hansel and Ted Sturtevant. Their previous work, Distortion, began with the inspiration to manipulate and distort existing architectural features. Similarly, in Counter Tension, the artists wanted to create the illusion of an altered character to the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery, providing an unexpected response by the viewer. By using the room itself as the “work of art,” the challenge was to dramatically change its appearance while not damaging any physical features. The concept of forces creating tension and stress, while also representing elements that appear to counteract these forces, is the chosen theme for this project.

This art installation is the result of collaboration between four artists, each of contributing a unique sensibility and approach to art making. Lisa Baldani Hansel, who received a MA in art and design education from the Rhode Island School of Design, is a designer and art educator with an extensive background in architecture and interior design. Doug Cluff received an MFA in painting and drawing from Claremont Graduate University and works as a charge scenic designer for major movie studios. Mike Hansel is an art educator who is also a practicing sculptor. Hansel received his MFA in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. You can see more of Hansel’s work at http://www.mikehansel.com. Ted Sturtevant has a BA from the University of Rhode Island and is the principle at EG Sturtevant Custom Furnishings and Concrete; see http://www.egsturtevant.com/ . Baldani Hansel, Hansel, and Sturtevant all teach art at St. George’s School in Middletown, RI. All four artists are Rhode Island residents.
